Matthias Church - Budapest

1.9 km distance from Budapest city center.

Matthias Church is situated in the first district of Budapest, up on Castle Hill, on the Holy Trinity Square. Officially, it is called the Church of our Lady, but it is popularly named after King Matthias Corvinus. Tradition holds that the first church building on this spot was established by St. Stephan, Hungary’s first king, in 1015. The present church was built in the middle of the 13th century, converted into a Gothic structure during in the 1370’s, and rebuilt in Baroque style after the Turkish occupation. The southwestern tower was added in 1470, under the reign of King Matthias. The 19th century saw extensive renovation work, resulting in the present form of the historic building – and this is when it became a coronation cathedral. The church building is open for tourists from 9am until 5pm on weekdays, from 9am until noon on Saturdays, and from 1 to 5pm on Sundays – various concerts and masses are held during the rest of the time.
